Het is kerstmis! 

Ik zou willen dat het elke dag zo was maar dit wordt door velen toch gezien als de tijd van het jaar om ook eens aan anderen te denken die het minder goed hebben dan ons. Een mooi moment dus om ook aan de kinderen in India te denken en samen proberen zoveel mogelijk kinderen een eerlijke kans geven om later iets van hun leven te maken. 


Ooit gehoord van Karma? Karma is alom bekend in India en is een begrip uit het hindoeïsme en het boeddhisme. In het Nederlands zou je dit kunnen vertalen naar ‘Wie goed doet, goed ontmoet’.

Stort dus nu je bijdrage op 56.20.22.554 zodat de school warme kleren kan aanschaffen voor de leerlingen nu de winter haar intrede doet in Bihar. En wie weet doet Karma dan iets goeds terug tijdens de feestdagen ;-)

Houd daarbij ook in gedachten dat ze in India met 1 euro (70 rupees) evenveel kunnen als wij hier met 10 euro!
Met trots kan ik overigens mededelen dat Studentenvereniging I*ESN met haar Bachelor Auction een bedrag van rond de €400 heeft opgehaald voor Stichting Bhavishya! Een supermooi bedrag waarmee we in het nieuwe jaar hele mooie dingen mee kunnen doen! Maar daarover later meer…

It’s Christmas! I wish every day could be like this but for some/many of us only these days are seen as the time of the year in which to think about others as well, others that are less fortunate than we are. So a good opportunity to also think about children in India and, together, try to give as many of those children  a fair chance to make something of their lives.

Ever heard about Karma? Karma is well-known in India and is a concept coming from Hinduism and Buddhism. In English you could translate this concept to “What goes around, comes around”. Make your donation now to 56.20.22.554 in order for the school to purchase warm clothes for the students now that the winter is making her appearance. And who knows, maybe Karma will return the favor during these holidays ;-) 
Also keep in mind that in India they can do as much with 10 euros (700 rupees) as we can do here with 100 euros! 

I’m also proud to announce that students association I*ESN Tilburg raised around €400 for the Bhavishya Foundation with their famous Bachelor Auction. An incredible amount which we can use in a very nice way in the new year. But more on that later.. THANK YOU I*ESN!

Mooie plannen! (Scroll down for English version!)

Beste vrienden,

Ik heb niet stilgezeten! Er staan een hoop leuke dingen op de planning:

1) Met een nieuw idee voor een schoolproject heb ik contact gelegd met twee middelbare scholen, in Gemert én in Tilburg. Waarschijnlijk gaan we binnenkort al beginnen op één van deze scholen om met een aantal leerlingen uit te zoeken wat er allemaal nodig is om een nieuwe school op te starten in ruraal India. Vervolgens zullen zij ook geld hiervoor proberen in te zamelen met, hopelijk, als uiteindelijke resultaat genoeg kennis en financiële middelen om daadwerkelijk een nieuwe school op te richten. Ik kan niet wachten om hiermee aan de slag te gaan!

2) Binnenkort zal de internationale Studentenvereniging I*ESN Tilburg (www.iesntilburg.nl) een Bachelor Auction organiseren waarbij begeerde vrijgezellen zullen worden geveild onder het gewillige studentenpubliek. We zijn nu aan het bespreken of dat de opbrengst hiervan naar Stichting Bhavishya gaat. Dat zou toch geweldig zijn!?

3) Het plan is om in Februari/Maart richting India te vliegen om met eigen ogen te zien hoe de school ervoor staat en wat de kinderen allemaal hebben geleerd in het afgelopen jaar. Bovendien wil ik dan meteen de mogelijkheden bekijken en wellicht alvast starten met de bouw van een nieuwe school in diezelfde regio, naar aanleiding van het eerdergenoemde project.

Dear Friends,

There are some nice developments I would like to mention:

1) With a new idea for a school project I contacted two high schools, in Gemert and in Tilburg. Probably we will start soon at one of these schools with a few students to find out what is needed to start up a new school in rural India. Subsequently they will try to raise money for this cause that, hopefully, results in sufficient knowledge and financial resources to actually start up the new school. Can't wait to start this project!

2) Soon the international students association I*ESN Tilburg (www.iesntilburg.nl) will organize a Bachelor Auction and at the moment we're discussing the possibility of donating its revenues to the Bhavishya Foundation. Wouldn't that be great!?

3) The plan is to fly to India around February/March and see with my own eyes how the school is doing and what the kids have learned in the past year. Besides, I would like to take a look at opportunities and possibly already start with building a new school in the same region, based on the aforementioned project.

Exciting times :)

In samenwerking met Benedikt (Duitse vriend die de school vorig jaar heeft bezocht en geholpen) en een Japanse NGO (die de regio steunt waar de school is gevestigd), zijn we de mogelijkheid aan het onderzoeken om een project op te starten met enkele Indiase vrouwen die daar wonen. De eventuele winst zal worden geïnvesteerd in de regio om welvaart te vergroten en duurzaamheid te bevorderen.
Mocht het noodzakelijk zijn, dan zal Stichting Bhavishya een beperkt bedrag doneren als startkapitaal om het project op gang te brengen. Echter, op de lange termijn moet het project duurzaam zijn en onafhankelijk kunnen opereren van liefdadigheidsgelden.

Ik zal over een paar weken meer informatie geven, wanneer we weten of het project daadwerkelijk kan worden gerealiseerd.

In cooperation with Benedikt (German friend who went to the school last year) and a Japanese NGO (that is supporting the region where the school is situated), we are looking into the possibility of starting a project with some Indian women there. The profits will be used to invest in the region to improve welfare & promote sustainability.
If necessary, the Bhavishya Foundation will provide a limited amount of start-up capital for this project. But on the long term the project should be sustainable, independent from charity.

More information will be given in a few weeks, when we know if the project can be actually realized.

Daar zijn we weer!
Van Christmas Spirit direct naar de zomer.

In Bihar (http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bihar) zitten ze op dit moment midden in het regenseizoen (monsoon). Je zou misschien zeggen dat we in Nederland in hetzelfde seizoen zitten als je kijkt naar de afgelopen weken maar in Bihar gaat het er toch iets harder aan toe. In India kennen ze in principe 3 seizoenen: Het koele seizoen van oktober tot februari, het hete seizoen van maart tot juni en het regenseizoen van midden juni tot september.  

Ik sta nog steeds in nauw contact met Rajesh en onlangs kreeg ik het volgende bericht: “School is going to start from 25^th June. here is now good whether now raining here.“ Het regenseizoen is dus begonnen en het hete seizoen is achter de rug.  Dat is maar beter ook want in April was het zo warm dat ze alleen ‘s morgens naar school konden en in Mei moest de school zelfs 3 weken dicht vanwege de extreme hitte. 

Doelen

Stichting Bhavishya bestaat inmiddels al weer meer dan een jaar! En aankomend jaar wil ik het grootser aanpakken. Dat betekent meer donateurs, meer naamsbekendheid en niet alleen meer binnen de eigen sociale kring. Heb je zelf ideeën om dit te bereiken, of wil je graag meehelpen? Mijn doel is om de steun te krijgen van minstens 20 vaste donateurs & 50 eenmalige/variabele donateurs binnen 1 jaar van nu. Bovendien wil ik in de komende 9 maanden weer een bezoek hebben gebracht aan de school (op eigen kosten uiteraard) om met eigen ogen te zien hoe het gaat met de school en of er investeringen nodig zijn die het onderwijs wellicht kunnen verbeteren in de regio.

Nog eenmaal ter herinnering:
Met een donatie aan Stichting Bhavishya worden o.a. schoolboeken, schriften, uniformen en rijst gekocht. Er gaan zo’n 85 kinderen naar de school, waarvan 20 weeskinderen zijn. De weeskinderen wonen ook in de school en er wordt gezorgd dat ze er 3 maaltijden per dag krijgen, dat hun uniformen worden gewassen en dat ze extra studiewerk kunnen doen na schooltijd.
Het kost 16.800 roepies (€280) per maand om de 20 weeskinderen te voeden en onderdak te verzorgen. Er zijn 3 leraren/leraressen aanwezig die ieder 2000 roepies per maand vragen, dat is nog niet eens €35. Inclusief overige kosten zoals het kopen van schriften, leerboeken en pennen komen de totale kosten per maand ongeveer uit op 27.500 roepies (€450). Dat is €5400 op jaarbasis en dus iets meer dan €60 per kind.
Dit betekent dat je voor slechts 5 euro per maand al een kind naar school stuurt en een toekomst (Bhavishya) geeft.

Here we are again!
From the Christmas Spirit straight to the summer.

In Bihar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bihar) they’re having the rain season at the moment. You might think we’re in the same season here in the Netherlands judging from the past weeks but in Bihar the monsoons are a bit more extreme. Basically, in India they have 3 seasons: the cold/cool season from October to February, the hot season from March to June and the rain season from mid June to September.

I’m still in close contact with Rajesh and recently I received the following message: “School is going to start from 25^th June. here is now good whether now raining here.“  So the rain season has started and the hot season has passed. This is probably for the best since the temperatures in April made it only possible for the children to attend the school in the mornings, and the extreme heat wave in May even forced the school to close down for 3 weeks.

Targets

The Bhavishya foundation has just celebrated its one year anniversary! And the upcoming year I want to do things bigger. That means more donors, more name recognition and not just people I know personally. Do you have ideas yourself on how to help me reach these goals, or you want to help out yourself? My goal is to get the support of at least 20 regular and 50 irregular donors within one year from now. Furthermore I want to visit the school in the upcoming 9 months (at own expense of course) to see with my own eyes how things are going and to look out for possible investment to further improve the education system in the area.

As a reminder:
A donation to the Bhavishya Foundation will be used to buy school books, notebooks, uniforms and rice. Around 85 children attend the school, of which 20 are orphans. The orphans also live in the school and the people there make sure they get 3 meals a day, that their uniforms will be washed and that there’s a possibility to study more after regular school hours.

To feed the 20 orphans and provide them with a roof over their head cost about 16.800 rupees (€280) a month. There are 3 teachers who each ask 2000 rupees a month, which is not even €35. Including other expenses like buying notebooks, school books and pens brings the total costs per month to approximately 27.500 rupees (€450). That’s €5400 in a year and hence a bit more than €60 per child.
This means that for only €5 a month you bring a child to school and give it a future (Bhavishya).
